Another year…another resolution…?
Do you do New Year’s resolutions?
I know it’s common practice to do a New Year’s resolution and in the entrepreneurial space, there’s another common theme…
WORD OF THE YEAR!
The idea behind resolutions and a word of the year is simple.
Accountability.
But like most resolutions (and I’ll just lump in word of the year too), 80% fall short and fall short fast. In fact, a study done by Strava and published by Inc. Magazine found that most fall short by the second week of February. They have since nicknamed January 19th, “Quitter’s Day.”
Talk about being pessimistic.
The article does go on to talk about creating healthy habits with a new perspective on how to create a resolution that will stick, which is to set measurable goal, piggybacking on habits you already have, and creating easier pathways to success.
**Meaning** Set goals that you can measure, add to habits you’ve already formed, and get rid of environments of resistance that can have you scrambling to go back to the dark side.
I like goals…I do
I like metrics…yes I love them in fact
And I like the idea of creating easier environments.
However, there’s something that I’ve found most people miss when it comes to this.
The 3 C’s…
- Clarity
- Consistency
- Celebration
And in that order! Yes, I’m even guilty of mixing those up from time to time.
Clarity comes first because if you’re going to set goals you need a reason why you want to achieve them. I don’t know about you, but I’m tried of setting goals that I only have lukewarm feelings for.
In the past, the goals are set because it’s just the right thing to do…and everyone asks, “What are your goals?” Heck I ask it to people too as it’s a great conversation starter.
But if I haven’t found clarity in what I really want and why I want it…the goals are just surface layer B.S. for me.
And that makes it really difficult to do the next C…consistency.
Consistency is part of those habits you need to solidify change, but consistency is often not met with the joy it deserves.
For a creative digital marketer such as myself, I don’t like doing the same thing all the time. So, when I decide on something, I am consistent in what will move that forward, not in the actual task itself.
Example: I decide I want to workout 3 times per week and work every muscle group each week. That’s a tangible metric and the reason I want to do that is that I want to increase my body’s level of muscle so that I can live longer and be stronger. But that doesn’t mean that I need to hit the gym every time I workout or that I need to work out on certain days every week. Heck I can work out twice in 1 day and that counts as 2! If I’m consistent with hitting those numbers, then I’m following through and will see the results.
Lastly, you’ve got to celebrate. Take it from this lady, as this has been difficult for me to learn. Celebrate even the small wins. Every time you get clear and are consistent with even the most minute part of your day, it’s cause for celebration. It’s doesn’t have to be a big grandiose celebration either…just a simple acknowledgement will do. Because those little wins bring in more wins, and more wins after that, and before you know it…You’ve created a massive win with what you set out to do.
Small steps win every time.
No need for a resolution.
No need for a word of the year (personally, I can’t settle for just one word anyway).
Instead, get clear on what you want, why you want it, and how believable it is for you to achieve in a 12-month timeframe.
Find ways of being consistent without being rigid.
And celebrate even the small wins so you can appreciate your journey.
Until next time,
Danielle
